Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Project 3: Book Cover Designs
by: Jon Reyes
I came up with this typographic cover design with the idea of making strong contrast based on the characters in the novel who in fact was just one character.  I decided to use the strongest color contrast possible which are black and white representing the good and the bad. I also used contrasting fonts which are also representative of the personalities with Stempel Garamond as the sophisticated, educated side of Dr.Jekyll while the a bold Futura font representing the evil and violent side of Mr. Hyde.
For this design I chose to represent the characters through silhouette and to highlight the climax of the novel. As seen in the cover we can see Dr. Jekyll in his lab spilling a concoction that resulted in a spill which took the shape of Mr. Hyde, his alternate character. I also used a gloomy color theme to represent the dark and sad nature of the story.
For this book cover, I decided to again use the spilled liquid which I feel is representative of the experiments that Dr. Jekyll did on himself.  The characters in the story would later learn of the dark secret that is hidden inside these experiments and how it has affected those around him even resulting in the death of his friends and other innocent people.
